George Storrs (1796\u20131879)<\/strong> was a prominent American Christian preacher, writer, abolitionist, and theologian best known for championing conditional immortality<\/em> (also called conditionalism) and influencing the Second Advent (Millerite) movement and later groups, including aspects of Seventh-day Adventist theology and the Bible Student movement that evolved into Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His life spanned major 19th-century American religious and social upheavals: the Second Great Awakening, fervent abolitionism, and intense millenarian expectations. Storrs embodied independent biblical inquiry, willingness to break from established churches when conscience demanded it, and a commitment to what he saw as restoring \u201cprimitive\u201d Christianity against traditions he viewed as unbiblical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early Life and Religious Formation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

George Storrs was born on December 13, 1796, in Lebanon, New Hampshire, the youngest of eight children (seven sons and one daughter). His father, Colonel Constant Storrs, originally from Mansfield, Connecticut, served as a wheelwright in the Revolutionary Army and later became a prosperous farmer after marrying Lucinda Howe. The family environment combined Revolutionary era patriotism with deep religious piety, his mother provided careful Calvinistic instruction, which left a lasting mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Storrs experienced religious conviction early. At around age 17\u201319, he converted and joined the Congregational Church. He married at age 22; his first wife died after a prolonged illness around 1825. During her sickness, Methodist ministers provided comfort, leading him to join the Methodist Episcopal Church. He began preaching and, in 1825 (at age 28\u201329), joined the New Hampshire Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He later married his first wife\u2019s sister, Martha Waterman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contemporaries described him as a \u201cstrong man, able and influential in its councils, and the beloved pastor of several important churches.\u201d He served in roles including at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and rose in the conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abolitionism and Growing Independence (1830s)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Storrs became a vocal abolitionist, lecturing extensively against slavery even when it was unpopular within Methodist circles (many bishops and leaders opposed agitating the issue). In 1835, he was arrested while praying for enslaved people at an antislavery meeting in Sanbornton Bridge (now Tilton), New Hampshire, but was freed after a trial. He defended abolitionists from charges of Sabbath desecration, arguing in print that \u201cthe Sabbath belongs, in a peculiar sense, to the slave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By 1836, he shifted to local preacher status to focus more on antislavery work and independent study. This period highlighted his decisiveness and \u201cinflexible firmness\u201d in following convictions, traits that defined his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discovery of Conditional Immortality (1837\u20131842)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 1837, while traveling by train, Storrs found a pamphlet by Philadelphia deacon Henry Grew<\/a> arguing against the inherent immortality of the soul and the doctrine of eternal conscious torment in hell. This challenged the traditional view Storrs had absorbed from Calvinism and Methodism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
