I. Why Compare Arabic and Hebrew?
Hebrew is the language of the Hebrew Bible and of Jewish liturgy. Arabic became, from the seventh century onward, the dominant language of administration, trade, and scholarship across much of the Jewish world. The two languages are not interchangeable, Hebrew remained the sacred tongue of Torah scrolls and synagogue cantillation, while Arabic supplied the classroom vocabulary in which many Jews explained that same text. Yet they are close enough that comparison illuminates both: shared roots, parallel verb patterns, and cognate words make Arabic one of the most powerful tools for understanding rare biblical Hebrew.
For the Masoretes and their heirs, the question was practical. By the early Middle Ages most Jews no longer spoke Hebrew at home. When Saadia Gaon and later Andalusian grammarians analyzed biblical forms, they did so in a civilization that already possessed a mature Arabic science of naḥw (syntax) and ṣarf (morphology). The similarities between the languages were not merely academic; they were the bridge that kept the pointed Masoretic text intelligible. Hebrew and Arabic are not parent and child. They are cousins, and for medieval Bible scholars, the better you knew the cousin, the more clearly you could hear the ancestor in the text.
II. Language: Roots, Patterns, and Cognates
Both languages build most vocabulary from triliteral roots: three consonants that carry core meaning, expanded by vowels and affixes into nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Hebrew שׁ-ל-ם (sh-l-m, wholeness/peace) and Arabic s-l-m (submission/peace) are the same root skeleton with different vowel melodies. Medieval grammarians such as Jonah ibn Janach routinely cited Arabic cognates to explain obscure biblical words.
Verbal systems parallel one another in broad outline. Hebrew qal, pi'el, and hif'il patterns correspond to Arabic fa'ala, fa''ala, and af'ala formations, not always one-to-one, but close enough that Arabic-trained readers could map biblical paradigms onto familiar tables. Sound correspondences are regular: Hebrew š often matches Arabic s, Hebrew t can correspond to Arabic ṯ, and the gutturals (ʾ, ʕ, ḥ) behave similarly in both systems.

The similarities have limits. Biblical Hebrew preserves archaic features, the waw-consecutive, the construct chain, and a smaller inventory of later loanwords, while classical Arabic was standardized around early literary texts and its grammatical tradition. Responsible comparison treats Arabic as a witness to Semitic structure, not as a decoder that can override the Masoretic reading tradition.
III. Scripts: One Family Tree, Two Branches
Today's Hebrew and Arabic alphabets look distinct at a glance, Hebrew square and compact, Arabic cursive and joined, yet both descend from the same ancient Near Eastern line. Phoenician consonantal writing spread through the Levant; Aramaic adapted it for imperial administration; and from that Aramaic matrix came the scripts Jews and Arabs use for Scripture and classical literature.
Jews adopted the square Aramaic script for Hebrew (and for Aramaic) during the Second Temple period, so that the consonants in a Masoretic codex look Aramaic even when the language is Hebrew. Arabic writing developed from Nabataean Aramaic, a related cursive form used in northern Arabia and the Negev. The result is a family resemblance: many letter shapes echo one another, especially in their older and medial forms, even though modern printed Hebrew and Arabic have diverged in direction, ligature, and typographic habit.
IV. How the Writing Systems Work
Hebrew and Arabic are both written right to left and are fundamentally consonantal: the letters on the page represent consonants (and, in Hebrew, some historically consonantal letters used as vowel markers). Readers supply or learn the vowels through tradition, context, or notation added above and below the line.

The parallel is instructive for Bible students. Just as the Masoretes felt compelled to write vowels onto Hebrew so the text could be read correctly without a living speech community, Arabic grammarians developed a precise notation for classical Arabic when vernacular dialects diverged from the literary standard. Both traditions treat the consonantal skeleton as sacred or canonical, and both treat vocalization as the scholarly key that unlocks it.

Hebrew also distinguishes שׁ (shin) and שׂ (sin); Arabic has separate šīn (ش) and sīn (س). Some letters appear in one language but not the other in the same form, for example Hebrew ץ / Arabic ḍād (ض), which is why comparative grammar always pairs sounds and roots, not only visual shape.
VI. Why It Mattered for Masoretic Study
The similarities were not a curiosity of linguistics alone. They underwrote the entire medieval project of Hebrew grammar and lexicography. When Saadia Gaon wrote the first systematic Hebrew grammar in Judeo-Arabic, he imported categories forged in Arabic philology: parts of speech, root extraction, weak verbs, and analogical reasoning (qiyās). In al-Andalus, the debate between Menahem ibn Saruq and Dunash ibn Labrat turned on how far Hebrew could be explained through Arabic models without losing its identity as the language of revelation.
The Cairo Genizah preserves the everyday fruit of this bilingual world: pointed Hebrew Bibles, Judeo-Arabic translations, children's alphabet exercises, and word lists that move between scripts and languages on a single page. For the Masoretic tradition, Arabic was never a replacement for Hebrew. It was the analytical language that made Hebrew's consonantal text pronounceable, parsable, and teachable across a diaspora that read Scripture in many tongues but returned always to the same letters on the line.
